It is our ministry to facilitate the inclusion of Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened persons into the life of the church.

Who are we?

In April, 1998, Bishop John Shelby Spong appointed a Task Force on Deaf Ministry in the Diocese of Newark. The goal of the Task Force was to ascertain (1) the form and extent of deaf ministry in the Diocese of Newark and (2) the needs of the churches in the Diocese to respond to and to include Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened persons in the life of the church.

In January, 2000, Bishop John Palmer Croneberger created the Commission on Ministry to the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened in the Diocese of Newark.

What do we do?

In 1998-99, we surveyed each congregation in the Diocese to discover their needs. We then published a Resource Directory for church use. The Commission offers a Bible Club for the Christian Education of Deaf children, and coordinates sign language interpreted services in various mission stations in the diocese. We also sponsor Deaf Awareness Sundays (in September each year) and we are a resource for the needs of the diocese.
